“So much of life, it seems to me, is determined by pure randomness.”

12 Sep

The title of this blog is a quote by Sidney Poitier.

I have a bunch of random thoughts in my head at any given point in time but decided I can’t really write a full blog for each of them because they are usually short thoughts with minimal detail.

That’s where this “segment” comes in.

We had a “cold front” come through this past weekend.  By “cold front” I mean a Houston, Texas cold front which means you are no longer completely frying in over 100 degree weather but slightly toasted in the high 80s.  I don’t know why the weather people call it a cold front when really it should be called a normal-bearable weather change.  The slight dip in temperature did get me excited because it made me think of Thanksgiving.  Is it sad that 80 degree weather reminds me of late November?

Yesterday, after an awful morning, I was walking down to Subway for lunch and I saw a homeless man sitting by the edge of a building.  I knew this guy was homeless because he is always in the same spot sleeping when my bus drops me off before daylight…either that or he is really dedicated to this begging profession.  He was awake this time and asked me for some change.  I never give anyone money because of the stereotypical beggars who spend their money on booze and cigs which just angers me.

But something in me decided I wanted to be nice and I told him I wouldn’t give him change but if he was hungry I would buy him lunch from Subway.  I mean, I would buy my friends and family lunch who can afford it, so why not this guy?  He took me up on the offer and got a Meatball Marinara sandwich, chips, and a drink.  I had a coupon for a free cookie so I threw that in his bag for him too since I don’t need the extra calories (and who doesn’t like cookies?).  He was such a nice guy and thanked me multiple times and told me to have a Blessed Day.

And I did.  It made me step back for a minute and appreciate the things that I have in my life.  My whole day was so much better.  I encourage you to give it a try.  Buy someone in need a meal, keep a blanket or clothes in your vehicle to give to someone you see sleeping on the street.  Even the small things help and you never know what kind of difference it’ll make for that person.

For work, we have to dress in business casual attire, which on some days can get pretty annoying…especially when I just want to throw on something comfortable and all I have are slacks or a pencil skirt.  So I got pretty excited when I saw a flyer posted stating that if we donate $35 to United Way, we could wear jeans whenever we wanted UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR!  As in December 31st! SOLD!  Donate to a good cause, add it to my tax deductions, and wear jeans for 4 whole months! You better believe that I wrote my $35 check the very next day and sported my jeans and boots!  Of course I still wear business casual a couple days out of the week so my co-workers don’t think I am a complete bum, but it’s nice having the option if I just feel like wearing jeans in the morning when I wake up!

totally what I look like in jeans…ha

I started a free 7-day trial at Snap Fitness.  Yesterday was my first day.  So far, I like this gym.  It doesn’t have any fun group fitness classes like zumba, yoga, or kick-boxing but all of the equipment is new and fancy, it was really clean, not very crowded, and close to my house.  We will see how I feel about this place at the end of my 7-day trial, but so far I’m thinking this could be a good place to get my smart-assy in shape!

Happy Hump Day!

I’m jealous of your homeless man story. I obviously see plenty of them too, but I refuse to give them money. So I always hope to see them when I happen to have brought my lunch or am just carrying around a bag of cookies for whatever reason (yes it happens lol) because I can always buy my own lunch instead and give them what I brought. But I never end up seeing them when that happens! I guess I should bring my lunch more often! 🙂

Great job! It reminds me so much of Juju and her journaling! Keep up the good work!
