CMA Awards 2012

2 Nov

Last night the 46th Annual CMA Awards came on ABC.  Once again, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood hosted and I can honestly say I wasn’t disappointed.  It may not have been as great as last year but they are always entertaining when they host together.  You can watch their comical intro here.

Brad Paisley & Carrie Underwood dancing to Gangnam Style

They covered everything from dancing to Gangnam Style to Taylor Swift’s love life, to motor-boating to joking about stripping Willie Nelson of his awards due to doping charges.  Brad joked about Carrie giving that little 12-year-old boy his first kiss on stage at one of her concerts and Brad claimed the boy was a mess now and said, “Way to peak at 12, kid.”  In their funny song, Carrie even made a play on words about subpoenas but it sounded like she said “some penis” so Brad made her repeat it.

During the commercial break there was an advertisement for CMA Country Christmas which is December 20th!  I love it!  For those of you who have never seen this in the past, it basically is a concert of country artists singing Christmas music and songs lifting up the Lord.  Perfection.  I still think Carrie Underwood’s rendition of “How Great Thou Art” from a couple of years ago is my favorite.  I can’t find the video from that performance but here is her singing it at the Girls Night Out in April 2011.  Makes me tear up every time I hear or watch it.

But anyways…back to the CMAs…

I know I don’t like Miranda Lambert and I’ve made that clear from my post about the CMA Music Festival but I do like the lyrics to “Over You” which was written by Blake Shelton and his wife, Miranda, for his brother who died in a car crash when they were younger.

I was glad to see this song win Song of the Year simply because of the lyrics.  The CMAs always remind me of my friend, Lauren, who died in a car crash in November 2009 so this kind of made me feel like Lauren was watching the CMAs in Heaven just as she had each year on Earth.  You can watch the music video to “Over You” here.

I have mixed feelings about Taylor Swift.  The girl has talent in her song writing ability but she is very hit or miss with me when it comes to performances.

Taylor Swift performs “Begin Again

Taylor performed “Begin Again” last night and I thought it was great.  Apparently I wasn’t the only one either because she received a standing ovation from the audience (like always) and each time she seems genuinely surprised at their response and it is heartwarming to see someone famous feel humble.  I just wonder if she trashes relationships for the material for her newest hits…

Hunter Hayes won New Artist of the Year and I was so excited for him!

Like I said before in my CMA Music Festival post, I have liked this kid since he was little and performing at the Willis Birthday Bash and Conroe Catfish Festival so it’s great seeing all of his hard work finally pay off for him!

Brad Paisley played a version of Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys…Only he could get away with that one…

Carrie Underwood performed “Blown Away” which was an interesting choice seeing as Sandy just destroyed the East Coast.

But of course Carrie did amazing as always! I know I have said it a million times but the woman has such an incredible voice.  Every. Single. Time. I hear her sing live, I get chills!  Even she must have impressed herself with last night’s performance because she mouthed “WOW” after finishing the last note.

Kelly Clarkson and Vince Gill performed a song together and to be honest, I was confused…

Kelly Clarkson & Vince Gill perform

It didn’t seem country at all but maybe that is just because I don’t know where Kelly belongs — Is she pop, country, what?  And where has Vince Gill been?? The last time I remember seeing him was when he performed “How Great Thou Art” with Carrie Underwood (see link above) in 2011.

The CMAs did a tribute to Willie Nelson with several performances of his songs by other artists.

Then Willie walked from his seat in the audience and joined them on stage to perform “On the Road Again.”  I wonder if he was high or if this was planned…maybe both.

The Shelton-Lamberts dominated the CMAs by taking home the awards for Song on the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year (Blake)!

Blake & Miranda showing off their loot!

I believe this is the 3rd year Miranda has won Female Vocalist of the Year and I don’t know how but the two of them appear to be so in love so it is nice to see them be successful together.

A lot of performers sang new songs or songs that aren’t as popular which I’m sure was to get their new hits out but it kind of made for a boring show seeing as I didn’t know the songs yet…but maybe it was just me and I need to stay on top of my country music better.  Who knows. Did anyone else feel like that last night or is it just me?

Overall I wasn’t thrilled with the CMAs but I also wasn’t disappointed.  What did y’all think?
