Last night my friend, Neva, invited me and my madre to play Bunco with her Bunco group which consists of her, her mom, and a bunch of ladies I have never met. I had never played Bunco before and didn’t even know what it was other than a dice-rolling game. But I love games, and sometimes like meeting new people, so I was all for a Bunco Night!
For those of you who don’t know what Bunco is, it’s a really easy game to catch on to and a lot easier to play than to explain but I will do my best…
Basically you have 3 dice and you have to roll as many of whatever target number you are on (1-6, obviously). If you roll that number, you get a point for however many die display the target number and keep rolling until you don’t roll that number again. If you roll 3 of a kind for that specific target number, that’s a Bunco! For example, say we are on round 1. If I roll a 1, 4, & 5, I get 1 point and get to roll again. Then I roll two 1’s & a 2, I get 2 points and keep on rolling! If I roll a 3, 5, & 6 then I suck and don’t get to roll again…this last example is the more common experience for me of the night.
You sit at tables of 4 and the person sitting across from you for 3 rounds (1,2,3 or 4,5,6) is your partner. You play until a team reaches 21 each round (in the whole room, not just your table) and the loser team moves to a different table. You switch partners every 3 rounds so you always play with someone new, which was good because I got to meet all of the ladies at some point. Just so you know, I never sat at the same table for multiple rounds in a row…aka I NEVER WON A SINGLE SET OF ROUNDS until the last set, which didn’t matter because we never moved tables again. Awesome.
Apparently there are different variations of playing this game with the number of tables (which depends on how many multiples of 4 you have playing), how the tables rotate, and who wins what prizes. <– Did I mention there are prizes?! This group pays $10 each night they play and the prizes are given out at follows:
Most Buncos – $40
Most Recent Bunco – Host’s Gift
Most Wins – $60
Most Losses – $20 <– they are so great they even want the person who sucks the most to be happy!
Unfortunately for me, I was the 2nd worst of the night so not only did I lose a whole, whole bunch, I lost one less game than Diane, Neva’s mom, so I got nothing.
The person who had the most recent Bunco gets to hold on to this ball.
This is so they know who gets the host’s gift at the end of the night.
They say there’s such thing as “Beginners Luck,” but apparently my mom boss-hogged all of that and left none for me because she ended up having the most Buncos for the night! Yay Mom!
Even though I did terrible, I had a lot of fun. I met some really amazing ladies who were pretty entertaining, learned a new game, ate some food, and drank some beer. What more can a girl ask for on a Monday night?
I’m thinking I may want to get my own Bunco group going! Anyone down for some Bunco?
